For years, decades even, it has been the stated fact that fat causes heart disease. We were told that fat causes high cholesterol and it destroys your blood vessels and your heart. It was stated over and over again that heart disease was a result of high blood cholesterol. Millions of statin drugs have been sold, severely restricted fat diets have been prescribed, and yet more people are dying of heart disease than ever.
A few years ago, it was discovered that the real cause of heart disease is the inflammation in the walls of the arteries. This puts a whole new light on the way heart disease will be treated.
It's well known in research and medical circles that the fat restrictive diets have created plagues of obesity and diabetes the likes of which have never been seen in our human history. Something has to change and the new discoveries in inflammation and its causes will no doubt have a positive effect on health although it may take a while to filter down to the masses.
Dr. Dwight Lundell, a prominent heart surgeon recently wrote and article which comes clean about the causes of heart disease and how the old boys club stuck together to avoid malpractice suits. Now the truth is coming out.and Dr. Lundell explains aspects of the inflammatory process.
From research we know that the body produces cholesterol in response to the inflammatory process caused mainly by diet. The body becomes irritated by certain foods and their additives. Processed foods, for example are highly inflammatory in the body. Other foods that can be highly inflammatory are dairy and grains. Members of the nightshade family, namely potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, sweet and hot peppers, tomatillos, tamarios, pimentos can also be inflammatory. Products made from them such as ketchup, paprika, tabasco and other hot sauces and cayenne powder are also in this group. Surprisingly, tobacco is also a nightshade plant. It is a chemical group called alkaloids that cause sensitivity in some individuals that causes the inflammatory response.
Because the Standard North American Diet has a high concentration of processed foods and is quite low in fresh vegetables no wonder we suffer from such a high rate of inflammation and thus heart disease.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes for new dietary suggestions come down the pipe if the pharmaceutical industry can let go of its strangle hold on the statin drug megamarket. For me, I suggest you eat lots of veggies and no nightshades. Alkaline, antioxidant water has also been known to reduce inflammation considerably if it is used instead of tap and bottled water.
